Non-government teachers across Bangladesh are set to stage a major demonstration in the capital on August 13, 2025, demanding the nationalization of their jobs. Organizers from the MPO-Registered Education Nationalization Aspirants’ Alliance expect over 20,000 teachers to attend, with preparations underway to reserve at least one bus from each of the 64 districts and up to 9-10 buses from some upazilas. The event is planned to be organized, strategic, and historic in fulfilling teachers’ long-standing demands, with 300 volunteers ensuring safety and order.

Principal Delawar Hossain Azizi, the alliance’s member secretary, told The Daily Campus that preparations are in full swing, with strong enthusiasm among teachers. “This gathering will surpass all past records. Unlike previous movements exploited for personal gain, we are committed to teachers’ welfare, earning their trust,” he said. Eight coordinators per division are overseeing logistics, with district and upazila coordinators ensuring seamless travel for attendees.

The teachers’ demands stem from unfulfilled promises. In 2018, a 20-day sit-in and hunger strike at the National Press Club secured a 5% annual increment and a 20% Boishakhi allowance, alongside a government pledge for nationalization that was never implemented. Recent talks with the interim government’s education advisor led to a 25% festival allowance increase for the 2024-25 fiscal year and promises of enhanced house rent, medical, and recreation allowances in the next budget. However, no official notification has been issued for these benefits or full festival allowances for 2025-26, prompting renewed protests. Azizi warned that without a clear commitment by August 13, tougher actions, including class boycotts, will follow.

The teachers’ movement highlights ongoing disparities, with demands for equal benefits like government teachers, including house rent, medical allowances, and full festival bonuses. Failure to address these could escalate into continuous protests, Azizi added.
