Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) has been named the top-ranked private university in the country according to the newly released Research.com Best Universities in Bangladesh 2025/2026 Ranking. Securing a global rank of 2137, IUB clinched the 3rd position overall among all public and private higher education institutions listed across the nation.

The evaluation metrics showed that Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University secured the first position nationally, followed by the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) in second place, with IUB completing the top three.

According to the official data released by the online research portal, IUB was featured in the rankings with two qualified scholars, a total of 332 publications, and a combined institutional H-index of 118.

Research.com, a leading academic platform that analyzes scientist profiles and institutional data using bibliometric indicators, also highlighted IUB’s exceptional strength in specialized scientific fields. In the discipline of Microbiology, the university achieved the number one rank within Bangladesh and was placed 527th globally. This specific discipline profile features prominent scientist Prof. Dr. Shah M. Faruque from IUB's Department of Life Sciences, who holds 153 publications and a Discipline H-index (D-index) of 66.

This milestone closely follows another major academic achievement for the institution, as IUB was recently ranked the number one private university in Bangladesh in the Nature Index institutional rankings, where it also claimed the top spot nationally in the Physical Sciences category. With these concurrent achievements, the university stands validated by two separate international ranking bodies as the premier institution in Bangladesh for two major scientific research domains.

The university leadership expressed great pride in the global recognition, attributing the success to a systematic and supportive research environment.

"These results show that IUB’s research strength is becoming visible across more than one scientific field. Our focus will remain on supporting serious research, building stronger academic groups, and encouraging work that meets international standards." — Prof. Dr. M. Tamim, Vice Chancellor, IUB

Echoing the same sentiment, Pro Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Daniel W. Lund emphasized the objectivity of the evaluation criteria. "Rankings based on research data are important because they reflect measurable scholarly output and impact. IUB’s performance in Microbiology and Physical Sciences points to the quality of work being done by our faculty and researchers," Prof. Lund noted.

The rankings published by Research.com are built entirely on verified bibliometric data extracted from reputable global open academic databases, specifically OpenAlex and CrossRef. While OpenAlex serves as an open index for tracking scholarly works, authors, institutions, and topics, CrossRef provides structural identification and digital linking through Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs).

The final position of each university was calculated by combining the D-indexes of its affiliated faculties who exceeded the platform's qualifying standards. The baseline bibliometric metrics for this global cycle were captured on November 27, 2024, after screening 279,971 independent scientist profiles worldwide and selecting those who maintained a discipline threshold of 20 or higher.
