The government has proposed borrowing Tk 112,000 crore from the banking sector in the upcoming 2026-27 fiscal year to finance its budget deficit.

Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury announced the projection while presenting the national budget for FY2026-27 in parliament today. He stated that the total budget deficit for FY27 has been estimated at Tk 243,000 crore, which is equivalent to 3.6 percent of the country's gross domestic product (GDP).

To effectively cover the projected deficit, the government has proposed sourcing Tk 127,000 crore from domestic avenues and Tk 116,000 crore from external sources.

Out of the targeted domestic borrowing, the government intends to raise Tk 112,000 crore directly from the banking system.

The proposed bank borrowing target marks a strategic shift from the previous cycle's financial parameters. In the FY2025-26 fiscal year, the government's bank borrowing amount stood at Tk 118,000 crore.

The Finance Minister added that this brings a net reduction, meaning borrowing from the banking system is proposed to be reduced by Tk 6,000 crore in the next fiscal year.
