Retake Exams for 422,905 HSC Planned Within a Month
A total of 594,113 students failed the 2026 HSC and equivalent examinations, with the government planning to give those who failed in one or two subjects another opportunity within a month.
The government plans to hold examinations within the next month for 422,905 students who failed in one or two subjects in the 2026 Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and equivalent examinations.
A total of 594,113 students failed this year's examinations, according to the results published on October 31. Of them, 422,905 failed in one or two subjects and will be allowed to sit for the examinations again.
Education Minister Dr Ehsanul Haque Milon said a significant number of students had failed in the examinations held under 11 education boards. Those who failed in one or two subjects would be given another opportunity, with the government planning to arrange the examinations within the next month.
He said that under the existing system, students who fail in one or more subjects in public examinations such as the SSC and HSC have to wait until the following year to sit for the examinations again. They can either retake only the subjects they failed or appear in all subjects if they wish.
However, having to wait an entire year after failing just one or two subjects creates additional mental pressure and can set students back in their academic careers, the minister said.
Earlier, Education Adviser Dr Mahdi Amin had also announced plans to arrange re-examinations for students who fail in one or two subjects.
"We are going to arrange re-examinations for those who fail in one or two subjects," he said.
He said the initiative aimed to prevent students from losing an academic year and help them secure admission to their preferred subjects and pursue further education. It would also allow students who wished to pursue alternative paths to focus on different career tracks and enter the workforce.
According to the published results, the overall pass rate in this year's HSC and equivalent examinations under 11 education boards stood at 52.12%.
Educational institutions and online platforms published the results simultaneously, ending the wait of around two and a half months for candidates under the 11 education boards. A total of 1,270,583 candidates were registered to take the examinations this year.
