Vijay Withdraws Controversial Appointment of Astrologer Amid Intense Criticism

Facing severe backlash from both the opposition and political allies, the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) in Tamil Nadu has rescinded the appointment of an astrologer as "Officer on Special Duty (Political)." The decision to remove him came on Wednesday (May 13), shortly after the government secured a dramatic victory in a floor test earlier in the morning.

The controversy erupted following the appointment of Radhan Pandit Vetrivel to the office of TVK chief and Chief Minister Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar. While the party attempted to defend the move, the mounting pressure from various quarters eventually forced a reversal.

The appointment drew sharp criticism not only from opposition parties but also from the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), a crucial ally of the TVK. VCK leaders reportedly expressed significant dissatisfaction with the move. The timing was particularly sensitive as the VCK’s support, including its two key seats, was instrumental in helping the Vijay-led government win the morning's confidence motion.

Prior to the withdrawal of the appointment, TVK leader C.T. Nirmal Kumar told journalists that Vetrivel’s professional background as an astrologer should not have been a point of contention. He maintained that Vetrivel was primarily brought in to serve as a media spokesperson and handler. "He is our media person and spokesperson. He can come from any profession; he was appointed specifically to handle media relations," Kumar argued.

Despite the party's official stance, local media reports suggested a deeper connection between the appointee and the Chief Minister’s political trajectory. It is alleged that Vetrivel had previously made several predictions regarding Vijay's political future. Furthermore, reports claimed that actor-turned-politician Vijay had even adjusted his oath-taking ceremony schedule based on Vetrivel’s astrological advice.

The rapid U-turn by the TVK administration is being seen as a move to stabilize the coalition and avoid further public embarrassment on a day that should have been defined by its legislative victory. Observers noted that the decision reflects the administration's vulnerability to internal ally pressure and the high level of scrutiny surrounding its initial governance choices.
