Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has announced plans to establish a new agricultural university, emphasizing the critical importance of an agricultural economy in Cumilla and its surrounding regions. The announcement was made on Saturday (May 16) during a street rally organized at the Lakshmipur Bazar ground in Barura upazila, Cumilla.

The Prime Minister stated that the government fulfilled its commitments to farmers within the first 10 days of forming the administration following the elections. Consequently, the outstanding loans and accumulated interests of approximately 1.2 million farmers across the country have been fully waived. Highlighting Bangladesh's identity as an agrarian nation, the Prime Minister noted that Cumilla and adjacent districts produce vast quantities of vegetables, many of which are currently being exported abroad.

Addressing a long-standing local demand for a dedicated higher education institution for agriculture, the Prime Minister assured the public that necessary steps will be initiated soon after discussions with the Education Minister.

The premier further affirmed that considering all relevant factors, efforts will be made to implement the project as swiftly as possible, adding that the administration will honor the plans and promises presented to the public prior to the elections.

During the rally, as the gathered crowd chanted slogans demanding the declaration of Cumilla as a formal administrative division, Tarique Rahman responded by stating that if everyone shares this unified demand, it will be implemented.

Earlier in the day, scheduled events included the inauguration of the re-excavation of the 'Khorda Khal' at Uaruk Bazar in Shahrasti Upazila, Chandpur, followed by the commencement of re-excavation work for the 'Biswa Khal' at Kumarduli village under Shah Mahmudpur Union in Chandpur Sadar Upazila.
