Zia Murder Accused Ex-Major Arrested After 45 Years
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Detective Branch (DB) has apprehended retired Major Md. Mozaffar Hossain, a convicted fugitive wanted in connection with the assassination of former President Shaheed Ziaur Rahman. The arrest terminates a high-profile evasion that spanned four and a half decades.
According to police sources, a specialized DB team conducted a late-night raid on Wednesday (July 15) in the capital’s Banani DOHS area, successfully taking the fugitive military officer into custody.
A senior detective official confirmed the operation to The Daily Campus on Thursday (July 16) afternoon.
"The Detective Branch has successfully apprehended retired Major Md. Mozaffar Hossain, who had been evading justice for 45 years following his direct involvement in the assassination of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman. Following the completion of all formal and legal procedures, he has been officially handed over to the Bangladesh Army for further action," the official stated.
Major (Retd) Mozaffar Hossain had gone into hiding immediately after the assassination of Ziaur Rahman in Chattogram on May 30, 1981, and managed to avoid law enforcement nets for nearly 45 years. Military authorities are currently processing the custody to initiate standard protocol.
