A Dhaka Metropolitan Court has granted a three-day remand for Sudip Chakroborthy, an Associate Professor of the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies at Dhaka University (DU), in connection with the suicide of student Munira Mahjabin Mimo. The court passed the order today, Sunday (May 3), following a hearing on the matter.

Earlier on Wednesday, the case’s investigating officer, Sub-Inspector (SI) Kazi Iqbal Hossain of Badda Police Station, had submitted an application seeking a three-day remand for the accused. The court had subsequently fixed May 3 for the hearing in the presence of the defendant.

According to case documents, Mimo was a student of the 2019-20 academic session and resided with her family in the capital's Badda area. Last Sunday morning, she was recovered unconscious from her room and rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

Police officials stated that a suicide note was recovered from the scene, which reportedly mentioned personal issues and financial transactions. Following the incident, the student’s father, Mohammad Golam Mostafa, filed a case at Badda Police Station against Sudip Chakroborthy, accusing him of abetting the suicide.

The police arrested Sudip Chakroborthy shortly after the case was filed and produced him in court. During the initial appearance, the court denied his bail plea and ordered him to be sent to jail. Legal sources indicate that the subsequent legal proceedings will be determined based on the information gathered during the three-day remand period.
