IU Forms 5-Member Probe Committee After Professor’s Murder in Office
Islamic University (IU) in Kushtia has constituted a five-member investigation committee to examine the circumstances surrounding the murder of Assistant Professor Asma Sadia Runa, chairperson of the Department of Social Welfare. Runa was fatally stabbed in her office on March 4 by a staff member identified as Fazlu, who then inflicted wounds on himself.
The committee was established through an office order signed by Acting Registrar Professor Dr. Monjurul Haque on Saturday (7 March). The order states that Runa was brutally killed in her department office on March 4 and directs the committee to submit a detailed and accurate report as quickly as possible.
Professor Dr. Md. Mizanur Rahman of the Department of Accounting and Information Systems has been appointed convener. Md. Golam Mawla, Deputy Registrar (Academic), will serve as member-secretary.
The other three members are: Professor Dr. Rashiduzzaman of the Department of Bangla and chairperson of the Department of Journalism, Professor Dr. Obaidul Islam, Student Adviser of the university, and Professor Dr. Gazi Arifuzzaman, Provost of Lalanshah Hall.
The formation of the committee follows widespread shock and condemnation across the academic community after the incident, which stemmed from long-standing grievances related to salary disputes and the staff member’s recent transfer to another department.
University sources said the committee is expected to review security protocols, departmental management practices, and the events leading to the attack to prevent similar incidents in the future.
