Govt Has Not Asked President to Resign: Home Minister

Clarifying the government’s stance amid widespread speculations, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed stated on Thursday that the BNP-led government has not asked President Md. Sahabuddin to step down from his post. However, he noted that the decision ultimately rests with the President should he choose to resign voluntarily.

Addressing journalists in Dhaka, the Home Minister addressed recent media reports suggesting an impending transition at Bangabhaban.

"If His Excellency the President wishes to resign—whether due to health reasons or any other factors—that option remains open to him. The government has not communicated anything to him in this regard."

Acknowledging that he had seen reports in news publications regarding the President's potential departure, the Home Minister refrained from confirming whether a formal resignation is currently underway.

Elaborating on the legal mechanism, Minister Salahuddin Ahmed emphasized the prescribed procedure: "If he wishes to resign, it must constitutionally be submitted to the Honorable Speaker. That is the established rule. Beyond this, I have no further information."
