In a significant shift to the academic calendar, the Ministry of Education has reached a preliminary decision to hold the 2027 Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and equivalent examinations in December. The decision was discussed during a high-level meeting focused on examination security and structural reforms held on Wednesday, March 25.

The move marks a departure from the traditional early-year schedule as the ministry works to streamline the academic session. Alongside the timing shift, officials are actively evaluating whether the number of subjects can be reduced without compromising the quality or international standards of the assessment.

Focus on Quality and Curriculum Reform

Education Minister Dr. A.N.M. Ehsanul Hoque Milon has emphasized that any reduction in subjects would be handled carefully to ensure that students' core competencies remain a priority. This initiative is part of a broader effort to modernize the evaluation process and reduce the immense academic pressure on young learners.

The Minister previously hinted at a move toward a national benchmark, stating that all students should be evaluated under a single standard. "If major competitive exams worldwide can be conducted with uniform questions, it is certainly possible in our country as well," he noted during recent discussions regarding the 2026 academic cycle.

Uniform Question Papers and Standards

The Ministry also reiterated its plan to introduce uniform question papers for public examinations nationwide starting as early as next year for some levels. While the 2026 SSC exams are set to proceed under the currently announced shortened syllabus, the 2027 session is expected to incorporate these more permanent structural changes.

A dedicated committee is expected to be finalized soon to provide a formal report on the feasibility of reducing subjects. Following the submission of this report, the Ministry of Education and the Inter-Education Board Coordination Committee will issue a final notification regarding the revised subject list and the detailed December schedule for 2027.
