RU student drowns in varsity swimming pool

A student of Rajshahi University (RU) drowned while swimming in the university's pool on Sunday afternoon. The deceased was identified as Saima Hossain, a 2020-21 session student of the Sociology Department. She hailed from Kushtia district.

The incident occurred in the afternoon when Saima entered the university swimming pool for a swim and went underwater. She was rescued and rushed to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH), where physicians declared her dead.

RU Proctor Prof Dr Mahbubur Rahman confirmed the matter to The Daily Campus, saying: "Yes, a female student has died—it's true. She was rescued from the water and taken to RMCH, where doctors pronounced her dead."

Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances of the tragedy, with initial reports suggesting no lifeguard was on duty at the time. The varsity administration expressed profound grief and announced a probe committee to review pool safety measures.
