The University Grants Commission (UGC) has sought proposals for launching new departments in the country's newly formed public universities. The 56th meeting of the commission on 28 September 2025 approved the request for proposals in five departments, with UGC set to approve two after final selection.

In a letter signed by Dr. Md. Mohibul Hasan, Additional Director of UGC's Public University Management Division, it was stated that proposals for the five specified departments have been recommended for submission to the commission. Subsequently, after on-site inspections of laboratories, infrastructure, and other ancillary facilities for the two selected departments, final approval and permission for student admissions will be granted based on the committee's recommendations.

The letter, issued on 23 October, directed the universities to proceed with the relevant activities.

Earlier, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had pledged to establish a public university in Naogaon. In that context, the university is currently being set up in Naogaon. The university act was passed in the National Parliament in February 2011. On 16 January 2025, Bangladesh's interim government renamed it from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman University, Naogaon, to Naogaon University. Currently, Professor Dr. Hasanat Ali is serving as the Vice-Chancellor of the university.
