Students of Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) blocked roads in Mirpur 10 and 11 areas on Sunday, demanding the arrest and exemplary punishment of those involved in the gang rape of a former BUP student by known drug peddlers in Savar’s Birulia area.

The protest began around 10:30am when students took positions on the main road in Mirpur 11, later moving to Mirpur 10. The blockade disrupted traffic, causing significant congestion in the area. Students from Bangladesh Maritime University and other institutions joined in solidarity, condemning the rising incidents of rape and violence against women nationwide. As part of their protest, they threw shoes at effigies of the accused.

Protesting students expressed outrage, stating, “The brutal assault on our former classmate is a disgrace to humanity. The accused must be arrested swiftly and face the harshest punishment.” They noted that while one suspect has been detained following the filing of a case, two others remain at large. The students vowed to continue their movement until authorities assure the arrest of all culprits.

A large police contingent was deployed at the site, with traffic police diverting vehicles through alternative routes to manage the congestion.

Savar Model Thana Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Jewel Miah told The Daily Campus, “One accused has been arrested, and operations are underway to apprehend the others. We urge the students to remain calm.”
