Two students from Chittagong University (CU) passed away on Friday (October 3), leaving the campus in mourning.

The deceased include Sohan Al Mafi, a 2016-17 session student from the Local Administration Department and former president of the CU Recitation Platform. He was currently employed at a non-government organization (NGO) in Dhaka.

The other is Debapriya Supta, a 2020-21 session student from the Banking and Insurance Department.

CU Proctor Professor Dr. Hossain Shaid Shohrowardhy confirmed Sohan's death, while Banking and Insurance Department Chairman Md. Abu Bakker Siddik verified Supta's passing.

Sohan and his friend Shakil checked into the White Peak Station Resort in Minjhiri Sadarpara, Fansiakhali Union, Lama Upazila, Bandarban, on Thursday morning (October 2) from Dhaka.

Around 1:30 PM, they went swimming in the nearby Matamuhuri River. Shakil reached the shore, but Sohan was swept away by strong currents.

Fire Service and Civil Defence Lama Sub-Office Assistant Sub-Officer Md. Abdullah said, “Tourist Sohan’s body was recovered from the Matamuhuri River at 11:00 AM today. After legal formalities, it was handed over to the family. Lama Thana OC Tofazzal Hossain, relatives, and local tourism association leaders were present.”

Meanwhile, Supta fell ill with suspected food poisoning during his Puja break travels.

He was first taken to Manikganj Sadar Hospital on Thursday evening, then referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital early Friday morning, where he succumbed.

Department Chairman Abu Bakker Siddik said, “It could be due to food poisoning. My students are heading to Manikganj and will update on details.”

Proctor Professor Dr. Hossain Shahid Sarwardy expressed, “We’ve lost two students on the same day. We are deeply saddened.”
