39 Teachers, Staff at Nazrul University Issued Show-Cause Notices Over Corruption Allegations

The administration of Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University has issued show-cause notices to 39 teachers, officers, and employees from various departments and offices amid allegations of irregularities and corruption. They have been accused of involvement in misconduct and graft during the previous "fascist Awami" regime. The notices were served on Tuesday (September 16) based on reports from the university's relevant investigation committees. Among the accused are 19 teachers and 20 officers-employees. They have been asked to submit written explanations within 10 working days.

The accused teachers include Dr. Mohammad Mehdi Ullah, the head of the Folklore Department. He faces serious allegations of becoming a teacher by leveraging influence from the Awami League despite not meeting eligibility criteria, and manipulating marks to rank a female student first and appoint her as a teacher in his department. Others who received show-cause notices are Md. Mushfiqur Rahman, Nusrat Sharmin Tania, and Dr. Md. Kamal Uddin from the Theatre and Performance Studies Department; Dr. Md. Jahidul Kabir and Dr. Musharrat Shabnam from the Music Department; Nagarbashi Barman and Masum Howlader from the Fine Arts Department; Md. Tariful Islam, the head of the Philosophy Department, and Md. Khairul Islam from the same department; Dr. Marjia Akter, Dr. Md. Sahabuddin, and Dr. Md. Mahbub Hossain from the Bangla Language and Literature Department; Dr. Masud Rana and Antara Mahbub from the Human Resources and Management Department; Dr. Mulla Aminul Islam from the Accounting and Information Systems Department; Dr. Md. Selim Al Mamun from the Computer Science and Engineering Department; Farzana Khanam from the English Language and Literature Department; and Dr. Md. Tuhinur Rahman from the Film and Media Studies Department.

The accused officers and employees include former Registrar Dr. Humayun Kabir; Md. Nazrul Islam, Additional Director of the Finance and Accounts Department; Md. Mahbubul Islam, Deputy Chief Engineer of the Engineering Department; Md. Abdul Halim, Additional Examination Controller; Kazi Mahbub Elahi, Additional Director of the Planning, Development, and Works Department; Md. Asaduzzaman, Caretaker of the Engineering Department; Rebecca Sultana, Personal Officer of the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department; Rozina Begum, Personal Officer of the English Language and Literature Department; Hall Superintendent Sohail Rana; Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr. Momtaz Begum; Nazmul Huda, Deputy Registrar (Stores); Jannatun Naim, Assistant Engineer; Md. Omar Faruk Sarkar, Deputy Director of the Physical Education Department; Rebecca Sultana, Deputy Examination Controller; SM Kausar Ahmed, Assistant Director (Finance); former Examination Controller Nirmal Chandra Saha; Radheshyam, Additional Director of the Finance and Accounts Department; Md. Mashiyur Rahman, Demonstrator of the Music Department; Senior Plumber Mohammad Asab ul Haq; and Khaleda Jesmin, Personal Officer of the Central Library.

Sources in the university administration revealed that following the mass uprising, three separate investigation committees were formed with members from the university's syndicate. These include a committee for probing administrative irregularities and corruption, another for academic irregularities and corruption, and a third for verifying and scrutinizing information on various incidents that occurred on campus at different times. The heads of these committees are syndicate members Mahbubur Rahman, Zakir Hossain Khan, and Professor Akhtar Hossain Mazumder.
