At least five students of Dhaka University (DU) were injured after a private car hit them in front of a gate near the Faculty of Business Studies (FBS) and Mall Chattar on Tuesday (October 13). The incident occurred around 11:20am. All the injured students are from the 2025-26 academic session, or the 32nd batch, of the university’s Department of Marketing.

The car involved in the accident belongs to Dr Md Shahidul Islam, a teacher of DU’s Department of Mathematics. His son, Sadman, was driving the vehicle at the time of the incident, according to information obtained.

Witnesses said some students were travelling in a rickshaw while others were standing near the gate when the car allegedly approached at high speed and struck them. At least five to six students were injured.

Two of the injured students suffered cuts to their legs and were bleeding, while several others sustained serious injuries. They were rescued and taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Fahim Rahman, a student of the Department of Marketing from the 2022-23 academic session, said he rushed to the road after hearing a loud noise and saw the car hit the rickshaw forcefully.

“The students in the rickshaw were thrown out, and several of them were injured,” he said.

Witnesses said angry students assaulted the two people inside the car and vandalised the vehicle shortly after the accident. DU Proctor Associate Professor Md Israfil Ratan Prang confirmed the accident, saying he had received reports that several students had fallen from a rickshaw.

“I heard about the accident. Several students fell from the rickshaw. Thank God, it was not a major accident,” he said.

Commenting on the vandalism by agitated students, the proctor said accidents could happen, but people should not respond by nearly beating someone to death, regardless of whether the person involved was a teacher’s son or anyone else.
