DU VC Calls for Action Against 404 Teachers Seeking Sheikh Hasina’s Return
Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. ABM Obaidul Islam stated on Saturday that legal action must be taken against 404 teachers from various universities who are reportedly attempting to bring back death-row convict Sheikh Hasina to the country.
Speaking at a discussion titled "The Role of University Teachers in Ousting the Fascist Government" at the Nawab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Building, the Vice-Chancellor emphasized that holding wrongdoers accountable is a matter of justice rather than political vengeance. The event was organized to commemorate the second anniversary of the historic July 2024 mass uprising.
"Why would they want to bring back a death-row convict? We don't know," Professor Islam said. "We are observing them. Action must be taken against them. This is not vengeance. But wrongdoers must be brought under law. If anyone is involved in sedition, the Home Minister will try them through the law."
Reflecting on the political environment under the previous administration, the DU Vice-Chancellor recalled how educators affiliated with the BNP-backed White Party faced constant surveillance, silencing, and systematic repression from Awami League loyalists.
He noted that despite facing severe institutional constraints and persecution, university teachers consistently took to the streets during national crises alongside fulfilling their traditional roles in education and research.
