Dr Matinur Rahman Appointed Vice-Chancellor of Islamic University
Islamic University has appointed Professor Dr A K M Matinur Rahman of the Department of Public Administration as its 15th Vice-Chancellor for a four-year term.
He succeeds Professor Dr Nakib Mohammad Nasrullah, the university’s 14th Vice-Chancellor.
The appointment was announced on Thursday (May 14) through a gazette notification signed by Deputy Secretary Md Sultan Ahmed of the Ministry of Education under the order of President and Chancellor Mohammed Shahabuddin.
According to the notification, Prof Rahman’s tenure as Vice-Chancellor will be effective from the date of joining and remain valid for four years. During this period, he will receive salary and allowances equivalent to his current position along with other benefits associated with the office in accordance with university rules.
The notification also stated that he will serve as the university’s chief executive officer and remain stationed on the campus on a full-time basis. The Chancellor reserves the authority to cancel the appointment at any time if necessary.
Prof Rahman completed his honours and master’s degrees in Political Science from University of Dhaka. He later earned an MA in International Relations from University of New South Wales and obtained a PhD under the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Islamic University.
Before being appointed Vice-Chancellor, he served in several administrative roles at the university, including press administrator, hall provost, proctor, department chair, and dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences.
In academic politics, Prof Rahman is widely known as a BNP-aligned teacher. He currently serves as central vice-president of the University Teachers Association of Bangladesh (UTAB) and convener of the White Panel teachers’ group at Islamic University.
He also previously served as elected vice-president and joint secretary general of the Bangladesh Teachers’ Federation, as well as president and general secretary of the Islamic University Teachers’ Association.
