The University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh has called an emergency press conference today, Monday (May 11), to provide details regarding an upcoming day-long national workshop aimed at transforming the country’s higher education sector.

The press conference is scheduled for 3:00 PM at the meeting room on the 6th floor of the UGC building in Agargaon. A notice signed by Mohammad Jaminur Rahman, Director (Additional Charge) of the Public Relations and Publication Division, confirmed the briefing.

The primary focus of the briefing is the workshop titled ‘Transforming Higher Education in Bangladesh: Roadmap to Sustainable Excellence’, which will be held tomorrow, Tuesday, May 12, 2026.

  • Inauguration: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to inaugurate the event.

  • Venue: Nawab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban, University of Dhaka.

  • Participants: The workshop will bring together government policymakers, UGC members, University Vice-Chancellors, eminent researchers, industry leaders, and development partners.

UGC Chairman Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed is expected to lead the press conference, joined by commission members and the workshop organizing committee. According to the UGC, the workshop is a critical step toward making the higher education system more time-befitting, inclusive, and sustainable.

In recent statements, Professor Ahmed has emphasized the need to transform Bangladesh into a "global hub" for international students and focused on the "circulation of talent" to integrate skilled Bangladeshis living abroad into the national development process.

The UGC has specially requested various media outlets to send one reporter and one camera person each to cover the emergency briefing. The commission intends to share the comprehensive roadmap and objectives of the workshop during the session.

This initiative comes amid a series of reforms in the education sector, including plans discussed by Education Minister Ehsanul Haque Milan to increase the education budget to 5% of the GDP and restructure the UGC into a more empowered "University Commission."
