Following the change in government, the process of restructuring top administrative positions in public universities continues. Sources indicate that new Vice-Chancellors (VC) for Islamic University (IU) and Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) are likely to be appointed within this week.

Since the BNP-led government took office, several VCs appointed during the previous Awami League and interim administrations have been replaced. High-profile institutions such as Dhaka University, Rajshahi University, and Jagannath University have already seen leadership transitions.

A senior official from the Ministry of Education, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told The Daily Campus that a shortlist of candidates for IU and BRUR has already been prepared.

"The process of replacing Vice-Chancellors at several universities, including BRUR and IU, is underway. We have completed the shortlisting of CVs. The formal notifications will be issued following final approval from the Prime Minister." — Education Ministry Official.

Sources further suggested that the appointment for Begum Rokeya University is in its final stages, and a notification could be issued within the next 24 to 48 hours.

Regarding Islamic University, changes are expected not only in the VC position but also for the post of Treasurer. Multiple sources suggest that two top leaders from the central and university units of the University Teachers' Association of Bangladesh (UTAB) are the frontrunners for these two primary administrative roles.

The government’s initiative to overhaul university administrations has gained momentum since March 16, when new VCs were appointed to nine universities simultaneously, including Dhaka University. Since then, appointments have also been made at:

  • National University

  • Chittagong University

  • KUET

  • Bangladesh Open University

  • Jagannath University

Furthermore, Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed, the outgoing Pro-VC of Dhaka University, recently took charge as the Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC). On May 7, Professor Dr. Md. Israfeel of Dhaka University’s Theater and Performance Studies department was appointed as the new VC of Thakurgaon University.

Other institutions currently under discussion for potential leadership changes include Rangamati Science and Technology University, Chandpur Science and Technology University, and Barishal University. However, official confirmation regarding the specific dates for these appointments remains pending.
