Four air-conditioning mechanics sustained burn injuries following an explosion during repair work at the Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) in Mirpur on Wednesday.

The incident occurred around 12:00 pm at the university's academic building. According to Omar Faruk, a staff member at the university, the blast took place while the technicians were performing maintenance tasks.

The injured individuals, identified as Al Mamun (31), Sujon Mia (31), Russell Ahmed (45), and Selim Hossain (30), were immediately transported to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery. According to the victims, the explosion was sudden and occurred despite the fact that the compressor had already been removed and the electricity supply was disconnected.

One of the technicians reported that the force of the blast caused significant burns to their hands, legs, and faces. The victims reported that they were repairing an AC unit situated near a kitchen area when the explosion happened. Curiously, the mechanics noted that the compressor of the unit had already been removed and the power supply was reportedly disconnected at the time of the blast.

“Suddenly, there was a loud explosion, and all four of us suffered burns to our hands, legs, and faces,” one of the injured mechanics stated from the hospital.

Medical Status and Investigation

Dr. Shawon Bin Rahman, a resident surgeon at the institute, confirmed that the victims received treatment at the emergency department. While they suffered burns to their extremities and faces, their injuries are currently described as non-critical. All four remain under observation to ensure no further complications arise.

The exact cause of the explosion remains unknown, as the removal of the compressor and the lack of electricity make the sudden blast an anomaly. University authorities and relevant experts are expected to investigate whether a gas leak or other external factors contributed to the accident.
