Dr. Omar Faruq said: “Professor Ataur Rahman Sir is no longer with us. He passed away this morning. We, the teachers of the Faculty of Arts at Dhaka University, had come to the Sundarbans for a tour. We are currently on the Alaska ship. Last night, everyone was on the ship. Sir was in his own cabin. This morning we heard that he is no more.”

He added: “It is presumed to be due to a cardiac arrest, though we are not certain yet because no one was with him at the time. We are deeply shocked by his death. The tour has been suspended, and we are now heading back towards Mongla.”

Professor Ataur Rahman Biswas was the Convener of University Teachers' Link (UTL), a platform formed by teachers from public and private universities across Bangladesh to protect the dignity of university teachers and uphold the spirit of the July 2024 mass uprising.
