Rajshahi University sacks three teachers, expels five students
Rajshahi University (RU) has dismissed three faculty members and taken disciplinary action against five students on various charges.
The decisions were unanimously approved at the 544th Syndicate meeting held on Tuesday (2 December) and confirmed through a press release signed by Public Relations Administrator Prof Dr Md Akhtar Hossain Mazumdar on Wednesday night (3 December).
Disciplinary actions against teachers
- Dr Anik Krishna Karmakar, Associate Professor, Department of Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering: Suspended for three years and barred from all examination-related duties for ten years.
- Prof Dr Prabhash Kumar Karmakar, Department of Statistics: Dismissed from service.
- Md Hedayet Ullah, Associate Professor, Department of Finance: Dismissed from service.
University authorities clarified that the dismissals of Prof Prabhash Kumar Karmakar and Md Hedayet Ullah are not yet final. A further investigation committee will submit its report, after which the syndicate will take the ultimate decision on permanent termination as per university ordinance.
Actions against students
- Two students: Permanently expelled and their academic certificates to be cancelled.
- One student: Permanently expelled.
- Two students: Expelled for one year.
The university has withheld the names of the students for special reasons, though officials confirmed the penalties are linked to incidents in the Finance Department.
Background of the Finance Department case
Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Prof Dr Moha. Main Uddin disclosed that on 11 May, Associate Professor Md Hedayet Ullah was accused of maintaining an unethical relationship with a female student of the same department in his office at Rabindranath Tagore Academic Building.
In connection with the same incident, three individuals – including a university journalist and a Law Department student – were permanently expelled on charges of attempting extortion. Certificates of the permanently expelled students will also be cancelled.
Additionally, the former coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement at RU and another university journalist were expelled for one year in relation to the same allegations.
The decisions took effect immediately from the date of the syndicate meeting.
