A Dhaka University student, Mst. Sumi Khatun (2018–19 session, Department of Sanskrit), was found hanging in her room at her family home in Kushtia late Monday night (24 November). Police and family have confirmed it as suicide.

Sumi had been suffering for years from the rare and painful bone disease fibrous dysplasia. Classmates said her bones had deteriorated severely despite multiple surgeries, leaving her in constant pain and with limited mobility. The prolonged physical torment and mental anguish are believed to have led to extreme depression.

Her younger aunt, Mosammat Kanchani, told The Daily Campus: “Before Fajr prayer, her parents found her hanging in her room. They cut the rope and brought her down. Police came in the morning, examined her medical reports, took her father to the station for formalities, and allowed the family to proceed with burial.”

Kushtia Mirpur Police Station OC Mominul Islam confirmed: “A Dhaka University student named Sumi committed suicide. We recovered the body in hanging condition. Detailed investigation is ongoing.”

Sumi’s classmates remembered her as someone who always tried to stay strong, attend classes when possible, and continue her studies despite her condition. Her funeral prayer was held after Zohr today.
