'Registrar Was Holding Political Meeting in Office,' Says RUCSU GS Ammar
Rajshahi University Students' Union (RUCSU) General Secretary Salahuddin Ammar has detailed a heated confrontation with Acting Registrar Prof Iftikharul Alam Masud, accusing him of delaying an official order while conducting a political meeting with BNP leaders in his office. In a late-night social media post on Sunday, Ammar narrated the incident that occurred at 2:00pm, explaining his decision to go public after repeated media inquiries.
The Daily Campus reproduces Ammar's full post verbatim for readers:
"I didn't want to bring today's incident (Sunday) to the forefront, which is why this post is coming at night despite the 2:00pm event!! Now I feel the need to clarify because journalist brothers keep calling.
The movement to remove the Chairman of the Clinical Psychology Department has been ongoing for nearly 23 days. Their classes, exams—everything is shut down. As a student representative, nothing could distress me more than this. I repeatedly requested the VC to resolve it by Tuesday. Later, on Thursday, the VC signed the removal order around 2:30pm and sent it to the Registrar. The only remaining step was for the Registrar to complete formalities and issue it to the department. This could have been done Thursday, but everyone in Clinical Psychology—students and faculty—knows the Chairman became head with the Registrar's direct support.
The letter was held until Sunday 2:00pm—meaning the 24th day of the department being locked. When I called the VC's secretary, he said the Registrar should have issued it long ago. I called the Registrar—he didn't pick up.
Left with no choice, I went to the Registrar's office with Clinical Psychology students. Upon entering, the Registrar's personal secretary (presumably) said: 'Sir is inside holding a program with Rajshahi Metropolitan BNP—come back later!!'
I don't know what you think, but remembering my 11,500+ votes, my blood boiled. The Registrar will hold political programs in office, sidelining such a critical issue?
I told him again: 'Tell Sir! Let him do politics, but this is urgent.' He returned with the same: 'Come later.' I entered myself and asked if the letter would be issued today. Then he started shouting—the full video is available. At the end, the video cuts—probably because Sir lunged at the person filming; they cut it in fear.
I left with the students because resolution is more urgent. Publicizing this would divert attention and delay the Clinical Psychology letter again. But by evening, word spread, and the video reached several people.
Personally, Salahuddin Ammar is nothing to this university, but the position I hold—its dignity was violated today. I am the directly elected General Secretary and Senate member by students.
One clarification: Registrar is essentially an officer post. Whoever sits there is an officer. Why he stepped down 7 levels from teaching to become Registrar for benefits—I don't know. But as long as I'm GS, InshaAllah, if any office delays work—tell me!
No mockery of students will be tolerated. Do politics or whatever, but perform duties during office hours. I, Salahuddin Ammar, sit from 8:00am to 12:00 midnight in Room 202 of the RUCSU building for students—come visit."
The incident stems from a 23-day student movement demanding the removal of the Clinical Psychology Department Chairman. The VC signed the order on Thursday, but it remained unissued until Sunday afternoon, allegedly due to the Registrar's political engagement.
Ammar emphasized prioritizing students' academic crisis over personal conflict, but condemned the use of university offices for political activities during work hours.
