Three medical colleges name halls after Osman Hadi
A group of students at Dhaka University (DU) has renamed Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall as 'Shaheed Osman Hadi Hall'. Banners with 'Shaheed Osman Hadi Hall' have also been hung in front of or inside the hall. However, the matter has not been discussed or decided in any meeting of the university's Academic Council or Syndicate.
Meanwhile, naming of establishments after Osman Hadi has begun in various institutions across the country following this incident. Among them, it is learnt that the matter at Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College has received formal approval.
Among the medical colleges, besides Tajuddin Ahmad, information has been received of demands to name the intern hostel of Sir Salimullah Medical College (SSMC) in Dhaka and the dormitory of Gopalganj Medical College as 'Shaheed Osman Hadi'. Already, banners reading 'Shaheed Osman Hadi Hall' at Gopalganj Medical and 'Shaheed Osman Hadi Intern Hostel' at SSMC have been hung by them. Alongside, they have also formally submitted demands to medical administration for official naming.
From medical college sources, it is learnt that following news of death of Inqilab Moncho spokesperson Osman Hadi while undergoing treatment after being shot, ghaibanas janaza and protest procession were held at Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College premises last Thursday (18 December). After janaza, intern doctor Dr. Nazmus Sakib proposed naming the college dormitory after martyr Osman Hadi. Present students expressed solidarity with his proposal.
In continuation of this, on Saturday students formally submitted demand for naming to college principal Professor Dr. Jobaida Sultana. On the same day, an emergency meeting of Academic Council was called under principal's chairmanship. In the meeting, decision was unanimously taken to name the dormitory 'Shaheed Osman Hadi Hall'.
Confirming the matter, Principal of Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Professor Dr. Jobaida Sultana told The Daily Campus, in response to students' demand, we have named the dormitory after martyr Osman Hadi. This decision was taken in Academic Council. We will inform Director General of Health Education Directorate about our decision.
Meanwhile, intern doctors of Salimullah Medical said to keep sacrifice of martyr Sharif Osman Hadi memorable, intern doctors of 47th batch of SSMC Mitford Hospital agreed to name current intern hostel 'Shaheed Osman Hadi Intern Hostel'. Using own funds, they prepared nameplate and installed it at main gate of hostel today Sunday (21). Alongside, they said formal demand will be submitted to hospital authorities for official recognition of this name.
On the other hand, on Thursday following incident of Osman Hadi's martyrdom, students of Gopalganj Medical College called protest procession immediately and again protest next day. They said on Friday (19 December) during protest and doa programme after Juma prayers, they named the dormitory 'Shaheed Osman Hadi Hall'. Alongside, they also demanded establishment of 'July and Anti-Hegemony Corner' in college academic building.
