Two Earthquakes Shook Bangladesh at Dawn

5.4-Magnitude Tremor Felt in Sylhet & Chattogram

Two earthquakes were felt in the early morning hours today, Monday (5 January), shaking Sylhet, Chattogram and surrounding areas. The first tremor occurred around 4:03 am, followed by a stronger one at approximately 4:47 am. No immediate reports of damage or casualties were received.

Mustafa Kamal Palash, a weather and climate researcher at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, shared details on his verified Facebook account.

In his post, Palash wrote: “The earthquake felt in Bangladesh this morning at 4:47 am had a magnitude of 5.1, occurring at a depth of 50 kilometres.”

He further added: “It is worth mentioning that another earthquake of magnitude 3.9 struck at 4:03 am today, at a depth of 54 kilometres.”

Meanwhile, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported the 4:47 am quake as having a magnitude of 5.4, at a depth of 35 kilometres. The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) and other international monitoring agencies also recorded the magnitude at 5.4.

Locals reported feeling the tremors in various parts of Sylhet city, including Zindabazar, Upashahar, Amberkhana, Tilagarh, Shah Paran police station area, as well as in South Surma, Jaintiapur, and Companiganj upazilas. However, no immediate reports of damage or injuries were received.

Neither the Bangladesh Meteorological Department nor any relevant authority has yet issued an official statement regarding the quakes.

It is worth noting that the Sylhet region is geologically known as an earthquake-prone area. Mild to moderate tremors have been felt here on various occasions in the past.
