Speculation regarding the potential resignation of President Md. Sahabuddin has intensified across the country's political landscape following information disclosed by investigative journalist Zulkarnain Saer Sami. Reports indicate that the President, who was appointed during the ousted Awami League administration, may step down citing health complications.

While neither the government nor major political parties have issued official statements, sources told media outlets that despite the formal rationale of health reasons, a growing confidence deficit and political distance have accelerated the developments. High-level sources within Bangabhaban suggested that President Sahabuddin may vacate his office within the current month.

Social Media Claims and Candidate Speculation

The widespread discussions gained momentum following a Facebook post by Zulkarnain Saer Sami on Wednesday afternoon. Sami claimed that President Sahabuddin is set to submit his resignation in the coming days on medical grounds. He further noted that current Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Gani has emerged as a top candidate for the presidency over senior political figures.

Earlier reports had linked senior BNP leaders, including Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain and Abdul Moyeen Khan, to potential consideration for the post, though figures within the political sphere stated they had no formal notification regarding the matter.

Under constitutional procedures, if the President tenders his resignation, the Speaker of the National Parliament will temporarily assume presidential duties as Acting President until a new head of state is elected through a parliamentary vote.

Sources close to the matter revealed that President Sahabuddin intends to seek advanced medical treatment abroad, specifically in Singapore, where he previously underwent bypass surgery and cardiovascular care. President Sahabuddin took his oath of office on 24 April 2023, serving three years and three months to date. According to the Constitution of Bangladesh, once the office of the President becomes vacant, a presidential election must be conducted within 90 days.
