Ninth pay scale gazette to be issued today

The much-awaited gazette for the ninth national pay scale is being issued today (September 19) after completing the necessary procedures, including legal vetting by the Law Ministry, officials at the Finance Ministry said.

The gazette is expected to be uploaded on the Finance Ministry’s website by 3pm on Saturday. The new salary structure will be effective from July 1, 2026. However, the revised basic pay will be implemented in three phases, while other benefits and allowances will take effect from January 1, 2028.

How much will salaries increase?

The existing 20 grades will remain unchanged under the new pay scale. The basic salary for employees in the lowest, 20th grade, will rise from Tk 8,250 to Tk 20,000, an increase of about 142 percent. At the other end, the basic salary for first-grade officials will double from Tk 78,000 to Tk 156,000.

Overall, basic salaries will increase by 100 to 142 percent depending on the grade, with relatively larger increases for employees in the lower grades. Around 24 lakh government employees will come under the new pay structure. The government is expected to spend an additional Tk 1,05,580 crore a year to implement it. More than 925,000 pensioners will also receive benefits under the new structure.

Separate SROs for different services

Alongside the main gazette, separate statutory regulatory orders (SROs) will be issued for civil government employees, police, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), the armed forces, autonomous and state-owned institutions, and the judicial service. After the gazette is published, work will begin on updating the iBAS++ system with the revised salaries and the new accounting structure.

The government will then proceed with salary fixation and adjustment of employees’ outstanding dues under the new pay scale. The new pay structure comes after more than a decade since the previous national pay scale was introduced.
