Dhaka University (DU) Chatra Dal leader SM Shahriar Alam Samyo was murdered for prohibiting weed sales at Sohrawardi Udyan, the Detective Branch (DB) has said. A chargesheet has been submitted against seven drug traders in the case.

The accused are: Mehdi Hasan, Md. Rabbi (aka Kabutor Rabbi), Md. Ripon (aka Akash), Nahid Hasan Papel, Md. Hridoy Islam, Md. Harun or Rashid Sohag (aka Lombor Sohag), and Md. Robin.

DB Inspector Akhtar Morshed filed the chargesheet in the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court Thursday evening, accusing the seven. Four others—Tamim Howladar, Somrat Mallik, Polash Sardar, and Sujan Sarkar—were recommended for discharge as charges were unproven.

The chargesheet states Mehdi Hasan, Ripon, Kabutor Rabbi, Papel, Hridoy, Robin, and Sohag were identified drug sellers at Sohrawardi Udyan, with Mehdi as leader. They sourced weed from Mehdi and sold on the central temple gate area, returning cash to him.

Mehdi, Rabbi, and Ripon allegedly killed Samyo with switchgear (knife) after disputes over missing pay, allegedly taken by "mastans." Samyo and friends had warned them against selling on May 13 night.

The FIR details: Rabbi was selling weed on the open stage with a taser gun when Samyo confronted him, demanding the device. Rabbi fled; Mehdi's group scuffled, leading to a brawl with a passerby's motorcycle crashing. Mehdi punched and stabbed Samyo in the thigh with the switchgear. As crowds gathered, they fled; Rabbi and Papel escaped on Ripon's motorcycle to Mehdi's hideout.

The case was filed May 14 at Shahbagh Thana by Samyo's brother Shariful Islam, naming 10–12 accused. Samyo, a 2018-19 international relations student and EF Rahman Hall Chatra Dal Literature Secretary, was killed at the temple gate after an event.
