HSC Candidate Commits Suicide After Poor Exam Performance
Driven by deep frustration over her ongoing Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examination performance, a female candidate named Disha Rani Mahanta (20) allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself in Durgapur upazila of Rajshahi. The tragic incident occurred at around 2:00 PM on Sunday (July 12) in Gunajipara village under Pananagar union of the upazila.
The deceased, Disha Rani Mahanta, was the daughter of Dwijendranath Mahanta of Gunajipara village. She was appearing in this year's HSC examinations from Dhokrakul Degree College in Puthia upazila.
According to family sources, Disha returned home after sitting for her exam yesterday afternoon and hanged herself from a ceiling beam using a saree inside her room, away from everyone's sight. Family members later discovered her hanging body and rushed her to the Durgapur Upazila Health Complex, where the attending physician declared her dead upon arrival.
Speaking on the incident, Disha's uncle Proshanto Kumar revealed that she had been under severe psychological stress since failing her Information and Communication Technology (ICT) subject last year. She sat for the examinations again this year to recover her grades, but became deeply depressed due to poor performance in the initial papers, which ultimately drove her to take her own life.
Durgapur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shafiqul Islam confirmed the incident, stating that a police team was immediately dispatched to the spot. While initial findings point heavily toward suicide, an unnatural death case is being filed, and a thorough investigation will be carried out to determine the legal course of action.
