US First Lady Melania Trump is set to preside over a United Nations Security Council meeting on Monday, marking a historic milestone as the United States assumes the Council's rotating presidency this month.

In a statement from her office, Melania Trump will “make history at the United Nations, taking the gavel as the United States assumes the Security Council Presidency to emphasise education’s role in advancing tolerance and world peace.”

UN Secretary-General spokesperson Stephane Dujarric confirmed the event, noting that this will be the first time a first lady—or first gentleman—has chaired a Security Council session.

The meeting comes at a time of heightened global tensions, including ongoing military confrontations involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, as well as widespread regional instability in the Middle East and beyond.

While the Security Council presidency rotates monthly among its 15 members and is typically held by a country's permanent representative or foreign minister, the US has chosen to highlight the symbolic role of the First Lady for this session, focusing the agenda on education as a tool for fostering tolerance and international peace.

No further details on the meeting's format, participants, or specific agenda items have been released yet.
