Government Takes Steps to Revive SAARC
The new government is actively working to revitalize the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). As part of this effort, Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman held a meeting on Tuesday (24 February) with SAARC Secretary-General Golam Sarwar to assess the current state of the organization.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Secretary-General Golam Sarwar confirmed that the discussion focused on formulating plans to make SAARC more dynamic and active.
When asked whether India-Pakistan tensions were posing obstacles to reviving SAARC, he replied that no specific country was discussed. The meeting covered ways to advance SAARC’s activities, including the possibility of holding a SAARC Summit.
He also noted that SAARC’s Programming Committee remains functional at present.
