Chhatra Dal Activists Play Loud Music in DU Halls, General Students Protest
On Tuesday (17 February) night around 10 pm, an altercation occurred between Chhatra Dal activists and general students at Dhaka University over loud music from sound boxes in the hall area. The incident took place at Kobi Jasimuddin Hall ground, where Chhatra Dal members from nearby halls organized a ‘DJ Night’ to celebrate BNP’s victory in the 13th National Parliament election.
The event was led by Misbah Uddin (Joint Convener, Shaheed Osman Hadi Hall Chhatra Dal), expelled leader Sharif Uddin Sarkar from the same hall, Abrar Harun (Joint Convener, Muktiyoddha Ziaur Rahman Hall Chhatra Dal), and Convener member Adnan Shahria, among others. Music at high volume started from 6 pm and continued despite complaints, resuming at maximum volume around 10 pm.
Students from Muktiyoddha Ziaur Rahman Hall, Kobi Jasimuddin Hall, Bijoy Ekattor Hall, and Shaheed Osman Hadi Hall raised slogans of ‘Fake, Fake’ in protest. When some students went to stop the music, heated exchanges took place with Chhatra Dal activists, though the situation calmed down shortly after. General students complained that the loud music disrupted their studies, with one student Sifat Ahmed saying he could not prepare or sleep due to the noise ahead of his semester final exam.
An organizer, 2024-25 session student Samiul Alam, claimed they had permission from the Proctor to play music until 10 pm. However, Kobi Jasimuddin Hall administration stated they have no record of such permission. A hall official said high-volume music is generally not allowed due to multiple residential halls nearby and disturbance to students.
