Education and Primary & Mass Education Minister Dr. A N M Ehsanul Haque Milon has announced that the government will rebuild 18 primary schools demolished for the Dhaka-Sylhet highway expansion project.

He made the remarks on Wednesday (15 April) while addressing a meeting with centre secretaries of Sylhet division regarding the upcoming SSC and equivalent examinations.

The minister said the Roads and Highways Department has removed 18 primary schools located on the highway alignment. The government will take necessary steps for their reconstruction.

He further stated, “If any education-loving person donates land for establishing a school, the ministry will construct the building with its own funds and name the institution after the donor.”

The minister acknowledged that the Teachers’ Welfare Trust is currently facing a severe financial crisis due to massive irregularities during the previous Awami League government. He assured that the government is working to resolve the issue and will try to allocate a special fund for the trust in the upcoming budget. He appealed for some time to fix the problem.

He expressed deep concern that many retired teachers are suffering without receiving their dues. Some have had to beg from their children for treatment, and in extreme cases, teachers have died due to lack of medical care.
