Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has announced that the Fifth Primary Education Development Programme (PEDP-5), a five-year initiative, will begin on 1 July 2026.

He made the announcement on Wednesday (15 April) during the question-answer session of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad.

Replying to a question from Chattogram-7 MP Humam Qader Chowdhury about providing English training to all primary school teachers, the Prime Minister said the current government’s election manifesto includes special training programmes to improve the quality and skills of primary teachers.

He informed the House that under the Fourth Primary Education Development Programme, 1.30 lakh teachers have already received English training. The new Fifth Programme will include the remaining teachers.

Other Highlights from PM’s Speech:

  • The government is actively considering the development of a Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP) framework and the establishment of a National Blue Economy Authority to ensure sustainable use of marine resources.
  • This aligns with the BNP’s election manifesto and the Coastal Zone Policy 2005 formulated during their previous term.

In a supplementary question, MP Humam Qader Chowdhury asked whether the government would introduce guidelines or certification for teacher recruitment in non-government schools. The Prime Minister replied that since these are private institutions, setting guidelines is primarily their responsibility, but the government would consider any specific proposals.
