VP Zitu, Shibir Dominates 20 Posts After 33 Years

Jahangirnagar University’s Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) election, held after 33 years, saw independent candidate Abdur Rashid Zitu elected as Vice-President (VP). Chhatra Shibir-backed candidates Md. Mazharul Islam, Ferdaus Al Hasan, and Ayesha Siddika Meghla secured the General Secretary (GS), Assistant General Secretary (AGS, male), and AGS (female) posts, respectively.
The results were announced by Chief Election Commissioner Professor Md. Muniruzzaman after 7:00 PM on Saturday (13 September) in the Senate Building. Zitu, running independently, won the VP post, but none of the other 20 candidates from his panel were elected. Other independent winners included Sheikh Jisan Ahmed (Cultural Editor), and Md. Mahmudul Hasan Kiran (Sports Editor). BDSC (Bangladesh Democratic Student Council) backed 'Sikkharrthi Oikya Forum' panel's Ahsan Labib (Social Service Editor) secured one secretarial post.
The Shibir-supported "Samonnito Shikkharti Jot" panel dominated, securing 20 of the 25 available posts. Shibir’s notable winners include Abu Ubayda Osama (Education and Research Editor), Safayet Mir (Environment Editor), and Jahidul Islam Bappy (Literature and Publication Editor). Additional Shibir victories include Rayhan Uddin (Assistant Cultural Editor), Ruhul Islam (Drama Editor), and Mahadi Hasan (Assistant Sports Editor, male).
Farhana Akter Lubna (Assistant Sports Editor, female), Rashedule Iman Likhon (IT and Library Editor), and Hafiz Ariful Islam (Social Service and Human Development Editor) also won for Shibir. Shibir’s other elected candidates include Touhid Islam and Nigar Sultana (Assistant Social Service Editors), Husne Mubarak (Health and Food Security Editor), and Tanbir Rahman (Transport Editor). Executive Member posts went to Shibir panel's Fablika Jahan, Nabila Binte Harun, and Nusrat Jahan (female), and Abu Talha, Md. Mahsin, Rakibul Islam, and BDSC panel's Mohammad Ali Chishti (male).
JUCSU comprises 25 posts, with 18 secretarial and 6 executive member roles. Shibir’s panel won 15 secretarial and 5 executive positions. In the 2025 Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) election, approximately 68% of the 11,759 registered voters cast their ballots. A total of 177 candidates contested for 25 posts in the central union, including 9 for Vice-President (VP), 8 for General Secretary (GS), and 16 for Assistant General Secretary (AGS). Only 6 female candidates participated.
Eight full and partial panels took part in the election. However, five panels, including one backed by Chhatra Dal, boycotted the election after voting began, citing allegations of irregularities. The boycotting panels included Progressive Students’ Unity, Bangladesh Chhatra Union and Chhatra Front’s ‘Sangshaptak Parishad,’ and the independent candidates’ ‘Angikar Parishad.’
A splinter group of Chhatra Front and several independent candidates also announced their boycott. A total of 11,897 students from the university’s 21 residential halls were eligible to vote, comprising 6,115 male and 5,728 female students. To facilitate voting, 224 booths were set up across 21 polling centers.
