Students of Rabindra University in Sirajganj blocked the Jamuna Bridge toll plaza connection on Thursday, demanding a permanent campus, disrupting traffic on one of Bangladesh’s busiest bridges. The protest began at 11:50 AM, with students setting up barricades, halting vehicle movement and causing long traffic jams on both sides, as reported by The Daily Campus.

Officer-in-Charge of Jamuna Bridge West Police Station, Md. Asaduzzaman, confirmed, “The barricades at the toll plaza connection have stopped all vehicle movement. Numerous vehicles are stranded on both sides.” He added that police are on-site, working to resolve the situation.

The Jamuna Bridge, a critical link connecting Dhaka with 22 districts, including 16 in the northern region, facilitates around 20,000–22,000 vehicles daily. The blockade has severely impacted commuters, with hundreds facing delays.

The students’ protest, ongoing since July 26, 2025, after boycotting Rabindra University Day, demands swift approval and implementation of the Development Project Proposal (DPP) for a permanent campus. Despite nine years since the university’s establishment, the DPP remains unapproved, prompting intensified actions, including a rail blockade in Ullapara the previous day.
