President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has urged Dhaka University to improve the quality of its education and take steps to position itself among the world’s leading universities.

He made the remarks on Sunday (October 4) when a delegation led by Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr A B M Obaidul Islam paid a courtesy call on him at Bangabhaban.

The president said Dhaka University is not only the country’s leading institution of higher education but also a centre of Bangladesh’s politics, history, heritage and culture.

He said democracy is a culture that develops gradually through regular practice. Free, fair and impartial elections are essential for this, while adequate space must also be given to political opponents and opposition parties to make democracy effective.

“That is the beauty of democracy,” he said, adding that democracy should be allowed to function effectively according to its own course.

During the meeting, Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr A B M Obaidul Islam congratulated Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on being elected president and briefed him on the university’s overall academic activities.

The vice-chancellor also formally invited the president to attend Dhaka University’s upcoming 54th convocation as chancellor. The president accepted the invitation and assured the delegation that he would attend the event.

Dhaka University Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) Prof Dr Abdus Salam, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Prof Dr Mohammad Almojaddedi Alfechani and Treasurer Prof Dr Mohammad Jahangir Alam Chowdhury were present at the meeting.

The president’s Military Secretary Major General A S M Bahaunddin, Secretary A J M Salahuddin Nagari and Press Secretary Md Sarwar Alam were also present.
