The UK-based independent policy and research organization, Center for Global Policy and Governance (PolicyGov UK), has expressed deep concern over the temporary suspension of three faculty members at Dhaka University (DU), including former Jagannath University Vice-Chancellor and DU Sociology Professor Sadeka Halim.

In a statement issued from London on Friday, PolicyGov UK emphasized that disciplinary proceedings within higher education institutions must strictly adhere to legal, transparent, and independent procedures. The organization urged authorities to safeguard academic freedom, institutional autonomy, and freedom of expression while executing administrative decisions.

The statement noted that universities function as essential centers for knowledge creation, critical thinking, and democratic dialogue. Internationally recognized principles of due process and institutional governance exist to protect academia from arbitrary interference and to ensure a fair working environment for educators, researchers, and students alike.

PolicyGov UK called for full clarity regarding charges brought against faculty members, stressing that affected individuals must be granted a meaningful opportunity to defend themselves before decisions impacting their professional careers are finalized. It further urged institutions to protect academic staff and students from harassment, threats, intimidation, or social pressure.

The statement comes after a Dhaka University Syndicate meeting, chaired by Vice-Chancellor Professor A B M Obaidul Islam, temporarily suspended three teachers on charges including unteacherly behavior and moral turpitude, while relieving four additional faculty members of their academic and administrative duties.
