DU Student’s Final Facebook Post Apologizes Before Tragic Suicide

A Dhaka University (DU) student, Sanju Baraik, from Jagannath Hall, took his own life by jumping from the roof of the hall’s newly constructed Rabindra Bhavan at around 5:30 AM on Monday, 14 July.
Sanju, a student of the Anthropology Department from the 2020-21 session, posted a Facebook status five hours prior, writing: “I’ve realized my mistake. I’ve been disturbing someone day after day, wrongly blaming others, which wasn’t right. I apologize to everyone. I’ve done wrong repeatedly, blaming others to cover my faults was not right. I seek forgiveness from all. If anyone has been harmed because of me, the responsibility is entirely mine. I am sorry.”
Jagannath Hall Provost Debasish Pal told The Daily Campus, “Around 5:36 AM, a cleaner witnessed him jump. The guard informed me, and with others’ help, he was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. The doctors declared him dead. Initially, we couldn’t identify him, but police from Shahbagh Thana found an anthropology department question paper in his pocket. We confirmed his identity through his classmates.”
On the reason for the suicide, Pal added, “His peers revealed he was struggling mentally due to issues in a romantic relationship. For the past two days, he wasn’t staying at the hall but at a childhood friend’s house. He returned today and jumped from the hall’s roof.”
