Shibir’s victory march continues unchecked in students’ union elections

From DUCSU to RUCSU, JUCSU and CUCSU, the winning streak of Islami Chhatra Shibir remained unbroken as the organisation secured a commanding victory in the Jagannath University Central Students’ Union (JnUCSU) election as well. With this latest triumph in the central students’ union polls of the country’s leading public universities, the organisation has further strengthened its dominant position in student politics.

On Wednesday (January 7) night, JnUCSU Chief Election Commissioner Professor Dr Mostafa Hasan formally announced the election results. According to the declared results, the Shibir-backed panel won 16 of the 21 posts.

An analysis of results from 38 centres shows that Shibir-supported candidate Md Riyazul Islam was elected vice-president (VP) with 5,598 votes. His closest rival, AKM Rakib, backed by Chatra Dal and also president of the university unit of Chhatra Adhikar Parishad, secured 4,688 votes.

For the general secretary (GS) post, Shibir’s Abdul Alim Arif obtained 5,475 votes while Chatra Dal candidate Khadijatul Kubra received 2,203 votes.

Masud Rana of Shibir won the assistant general secretary (AGS) position with 5,020 votes, while his Chatra Dal rival Tanjil got 3,944 votes.

Besides these, candidates from the Shibir-supported “Adomya Jobian Oikya” panel who emerged victorious are: Md Nurnobi (Liberation War and Democracy Affairs Secretary, 5,400 votes), Ibrahim Khalil (Education and Research Secretary, 5,524 votes), Sukhimon Khatun (Science and Technology Secretary, 4,486 votes), Nur Mohammad (Health and Environment Secretary, 4,470 votes), Habib Mohammad Faruk (Law and Human Rights Secretary, 4,654 votes), Naoshin Nawar (International Affairs Secretary, 4,401 votes), Jorjis Anwar Naim (Sports Secretary, 2,467 votes) and Mostafizur Rahman (Social Service and Student Welfare Secretary, 3,486 votes).

Earlier, in the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election held on September 9 last year, Shibir-backed candidates won 23 of the 28 posts, including VP, GS and AGS.

Two days later, on September 11, Shibir-supported “Somonnito Shikkharthi Jote” panel secured 20 of the 25 posts, including GS, in the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) election held after 33 years.

Shibir also achieved major success in the Rajshahi University Central Students’ Union (RUCSU) election held after more than three decades. In the 17th RUCSU election in the university’s 72-year history, the Shibir-backed panel captured 20 of the 23 posts.

Moreover, in the Chittagong University Central Students’ Union (CUCSU) election held on October 15 after 44 years, Islami Chhatra Shibir registered an overwhelming victory as its supported “Sompriti’r Shiksharthi Jote” won the VP and GS posts along with 24 positions in total.
