JU Student Detained with 21 Bottles of Foreign Liquor from Hall Room

A student affiliated with Chatra Dal has been detained along with 21 bottles of foreign liquor from room number 723 of Kazi Nazrul Islam Hall at Jahangirnagar University (JU).

The arrest was made on Sunday (4 January) around 9:30 pm following a raid conducted by hall administration based on secret information.

The detained student is Md Fazle Azwad, a student of the 2022-23 session (52nd batch) in the Department of Government and Politics. He is a legitimate resident of Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall. His family home is in Dewanganj upazila of Jamalpur district.

Azwad is an activist of the university branch of Chatra Dal. He also contested the Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall students' union election held on 11 September 2024 as a candidate for the Social Welfare Secretary post from the Chatra Dal panel.

According to hall administration sources, acting on secret information, the hall provost Professor Abdur Razzaq led the raid on room 723 around 10:00 pm on Sunday. During the search, 21 bottles of foreign liquor were recovered, and Azwad was detained.

In initial questioning, the detained student Azwad claimed that he had brought the liquor from his village home in Jamalpur for personal consumption. In further interrogation, he stated that he had brought the bottles from the border area of Jamalpur for celebrating Thirty-First Night (New Year's Eve).

After the operation, Acting Hall Provost Professor Dr Muhammad Abdur Razzaq said: “Today around 9:30 pm, based on secret information, hall administration and hall parliament members conducted an immediate raid on room 723. We seized 17 bottles of vodka and 3 bottles of whisky, totaling 20 bottles of liquor.”

He further stated: “A probe committee will be formed in this regard. Action will be taken according to university disciplinary rules based on the committee’s recommendations.”
