DUCSU Candidates Condemn Brutal Attack on Nurul Haque Nur

A violent clash outside the Jatiya Party (JaPa) office in Dhaka’s Kakrail, marked by counter-chases and brick-throwing, escalated into a brutal attack by police, army, and plainclothes personnel, leaving Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur and over 50 of his party’s activists bloodied. Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) candidates for Vice President (VP), General Secretary (GS), and Assistant General Secretary (AGS) have voiced strong protests against this incident.
On the night of Friday, August 29, 2025, following the attack on former DUCSU VP Nurul Haque Nur, candidates including VP hopefuls Abidul Islam Khan, Sadiq Kayem, Umama Fatema, Abdul Qader, Julius Caesar Talukder, Sheikh Tasnim Afroz Emi, Abdul Wahed, GS candidates Meghmallar Basu, Sheikh Tanvir Bari Hamim, Sabina Yasmin, and AGS candidates Mahiuddin Khan and Mahiuddin Roni took to Facebook to express their outrage.
Reactions from DUCSU Candidates
- Abidul Islam Khan (Chhatra Dal, VP candidate): “I condemn the brutal attack on former DUCSU VP Nurul Haque Nur. This is an ominous sign.”
- Sadiq Kayem (Chhatra Shibir, VP candidate): “I strongly condemn and protest the savage attack on former DUCSU VP and Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur, a national leader and frontline fighter against fascism. Such a shameful attack by police and army during a political program shows how far we are from meaningful reforms.”
- Umama Fatema (VP candidate): “I protest the army’s attack on former DUCSU VP and Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur. I denounce the army’s audacity.”
- Abdul Qader (VP candidate): “No more military, return to the barracks quickly.”
- Julius Caesar Talukder (VP candidate): “I strongly condemn the attack on former DUCSU VP Nurul Haque Nur. Such incidents obstruct the building of a democratic Bangladesh. The spirit of the July mass uprising is being crushed by the state machinery. I pray for the recovery of Nur and all injured, so they can resume their work for a democratic state.”
- Sheikh Tasnim Afroz Emi (VP candidate): “I condemn the attack on Nur bhai. I want to know what the police reform commission is doing. If police brutality remains the same or worsens, I oppose spending another public penny on these so-called reformers. Throw them in the dustbin.”
- Abdul Wahed (VP candidate): “I condemn the bloody attack by the army and police on Nurul Haque Nur bhai. I fear the country is heading toward a deep crisis. May Allah protect this nation.”
- Meghmallar Basu (GS candidate): “I strongly condemn the attack on Nurul Haque Nur. We didn’t launch an uprising to witness such arrogance from uniformed forces. The taste of freedom remains elusive.”
- Sabina Yasmin (GS candidate): “No more military, return to the barracks quickly.”
- Sheikh Tanvir Bari Hamim (GS candidate): “I protest the attack on former DUCSU VP Nur bhai.”
- Mahiuddin Khan (AGS candidate): “Such a disgraceful attack during a political program proves we have a long way to go for reforms. I condemn the attack on Nurul Haque Nur.”
- Mahiuddin Roni (AGS candidate): “The interim government enabled this heinous attack on Nur bhai. This is the consequence of failing to reform a police-administration serving fallen autocrats. The interim government bears full responsibility for this failure. They promised comprehensive reforms but have betrayed the people with excuses, merely enjoying power during the best time for reform. The prime opportunity for change has slipped away. If this continues, every advisor must answer for deceiving the public.” Earlier, he wrote: “I condemn the heinous attack on Nur bhai. The home affairs advisor must be held accountable. The attackers from the autocrat-aligned Jatiya Party must face maximum punishment.”
