President Sahabuddin Resigns

President Md. Sahabuddin has officially tendered his resignation, and his resignation letter has been accepted. Following the vacancy of the presidential office, Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, will discharge the duties of the President as per the Constitution until a newly elected successor assumes office.

The Parliament Secretariat confirmed the development on Friday afternoon (July 24) through an official press notification released by Public Relations Branch-1.

According to the press release signed by Md. Rashed Mizan, Assistant Director at the Parliament Secretariat, an emergency press briefing was convened at 5:00 PM on Friday at the Oath Room (East Block, Level-1) of the Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad to address the acceptance of the resignation letter and clarify subsequent constitutional measures.

Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed will address the media during the conference to present the complete details regarding the presidential transition.

Constitutional Framework for Electing the Successor

Under Article 123(2) of the Constitution of Bangladesh, when the office of the President becomes vacant due to death, resignation, or removal, a fresh presidential election must be conducted within 90 days. Furthermore, Article 48(1) stipulates that the President is elected through votes cast by Members of Parliament.

With the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) holding a clear parliamentary majority, the candidate nominated by the party stands as the frontrunner to secure the presidency. High-level discussions within BNP's senior leadership have been ongoing over the past few days to select the candidate to succeed Md. Sahabuddin.
