Newly elected MP Barrister Rumeen Farhana from Brahmanbaria-2 (Sarail-Ashuganj and part of Bijoynagar) has warned that if BNP fails to control its local leaders and activists, the consequences will be disastrous. She made the statement around 2:00 am on Friday night while speaking to journalists at her residence in Shahbazpur, Sarail.

Earlier, while attempting to lay a wreath at the Sarail Central Shaheed Minar to pay tribute to language martyrs on the first hour of Martyrs' Day, she was obstructed by BNP leaders and activists. Her supporters protested by blocking the Dhaka-Sylhet highway.

Describing the incident, Rumeen Farhana said: “At 12:01 am, as the elected MP, I was supposed to place flowers first. But some BNP people launched a virtual attack there. The situation became so tense that I was pushed aside and nearly knocked down.”

Expressing concern about the party's current state and future, she added: “After 17 long years, BNP has come to power again. If BNP does not control its leaders and activists at the local level right now, the consequences will be catastrophic.”

Claiming the attack was not sudden but pre-planned, she said: “The incident was premeditated. The upazila BNP president and secretary were not present there. A group of unruly youths, led by someone known locally as a thug, carried out the attack. There is an element of political rivalry behind it.”

She recalled her independent candidacy in the recent election, saying: “I won as an independent candidate. They are struggling to accept the defeat.”

Highlighting limitations of law enforcement, Rumeen Farhana said: “Police tried their best. But when ruling party leaders and activists go on a rampage, five to ten policemen cannot control it.” She strongly condemned such politically motivated and vengeful behavior at a sacred place like the Shaheed Minar and demanded strict action against the perpetrators.
