Two senior leaders in talks over Speaker post; final decision imminent
Political circles are abuzz with discussions over the Speaker position in the 13th Jatiya Sangsad. Senior BNP Vice Chairman and Supreme Court lawyer Advocate Zainul Abedin and Standing Committee member Dr. Abdul Moin Khan are the two most prominently mentioned names as potential candidates. The first session of the new parliament is scheduled for 26 February, where MPs will elect the Speaker through voting.
Advocate Zainul Abedin’s long experience as a lawyer, expertise in constitutional and election law, and active political role have placed him strongly in the discussions. Party sources say his parliamentary experience and political maturity are key factors being considered. No formal decision has been announced by the party yet.
Dr. Abdul Moin Khan, a Standing Committee member, has remained outside the cabinet so far despite most other senior members receiving key positions. He won the Narsingdi-2 seat in the recent election and has been elected MP four times in his career. Many believe his seniority as a former Dhaka University teacher and respected figure makes him a suitable choice for Speaker. The final decision is expected to depend on parliamentary equations and party strategy.
