Subrata Bain aide Mehedi Hasan Dipu arrested: Who is Dipu?
A joint team led by the army arrested Mehedi Hasan alias Dipu—described by police as a close associate of top gangster Subrata Bain—from his own house at Bepareepara, Middle Badda, on Friday. Officers recovered 11 modern foreign firearms and 394 rounds of ammunition from a third-floor flat. Dipu has been placed on five days’ remand in an arms case after Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin approved police’s request (seven days sought).
Assistant Commissioner Asaduzzaman of DMP’s Badda zone said Dipu was picked up with weapons and ammo and booked under the Arms Act. SI Kamal Hossain of DMP prosecution confirmed the remand; IO SI Suman Mia argued Dipu was hiding details of accomplices in Badda–Vatara and other areas where illegal buying and selling of arms have long taken place.
Who is Dipu?
Police say Dipu ran crime operations for Subrata Bain in Rampura, Banasree, Badda, Vatara, Baridhara, and Gulshan after Bain and fellow gangster Molla Masud were arrested by joint forces in Kushtia in May last year. They believe more weapons remain with Dipu and his associates. Case documents state he has long traded arms and ammunition across the capital. Sources list other Bain lieutenants as Wasir Mahmud Saeed (Bor Saeed), Golam Mortuza Babu (Madhu Babu), and Sohel (Kanni Sohel); they are linked to multiple killings, including the 20 March murder of internet businessman Sumon near Gulshan Police Plaza (Saeed was arrested, later bailed).
Police also link Dipu to former Ward‑37 councillor Md Jahangir Alam and his brother Almagir. After 5 August, Bain allegedly re‑emerged, imported weapons from a neighbouring country, and extorted large sums—hundreds of thousands of taka daily—from a fish depot inside Merul Badda; Dipu took over that depot after Bain’s arrest and also extorted car showrooms, garment factories, and the waste “jhute” trade. DB sources say Dipu’s group worked as contract killers in Badda, Vatara and rented out weapons; Bain’s arms are held by Dipu and Madhu Babu, who is thought to have another 13–14 guns.
DB says Bain is now in Cumilla jail; his daughter Khadija Yasmin relayed messages between him and aides like Dipu and Madhu Babu. Bain’s associates were tied to the 19 April shooting of Jubo Dal leader Arif Sikder outside “The Jhil Café” in Noyatola, Hatirjheel; Arif later died.
From Dipu’s North Badda house, police recovered 11 firearms, 394 rounds, eight pistol magazines, 32 cartridges, one .22 Uzi machine gun rifle, two Uzi magazines, three Chinese machetes, one Tiger hunting commando knife, two walkie‑talkies with a spare battery, three pistol side covers, and one laptop.
Badda SI Md Hasanur Rahman filed the Arms Act case. The remand petition said Dipu is trying to mislead investigators about unnamed fugitives; seven days were sought to unearth the network, five were granted.
