The election for Sherpur-3 (Sribordi-Jhinaigati) constituency has been suspended following the death of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami's nominated candidate and Sherpur district secretary Alhaj Nuruzzaman Badal (51). Election Commission Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed confirmed the decision to media on Wednesday (4 February).

Legal Basis for Suspension

Returning Officer and District Administrator Tarafdar Mahmudur Rahman stated that the suspension follows Section 17(1) of the election law, which mandates immediate cancellation of election activities in a constituency if a validly nominated candidate dies after the nomination withdrawal deadline but before polling. A gazette notification is being prepared, and a new election schedule for the seat will be announced later.

Details of Candidate's Death

Nuruzzaman Badal suffered a stroke around midnight on Tuesday and was rushed to hospital. He died at approximately 2:30 am Wednesday due to cardiac arrest while undergoing treatment. Party sources confirmed he had been suffering from kidney disease for a long time.
